New York City will distribute posters along the U.S.-Mexico border, urging new immigrants to “consider another city” and restrict shelter stays for adults asylum seekers to a maximum of 60 days. The city’s Democratic mayor claims it is struggling to house asylum seekers.
In a press release on Wednesday The office of the Eric Adams, the mayor of Eric Adams said the flyers are designed for “combat misinformation at the border” and that the city would assist people find alternative accommodation in order to “take the next step in their journey.”
New York City says that it has assisted more than 90,000 immigrants since last spring and that more than 55,000 are under its control. Many of the migrants arrived on buses arranged from Texas governor Greg Abbott, a Republican who has attempted to transfer the burden of assisting these people on to Democratic strongholds.
New York is bound by an old consent decree from an action class-action suit to provide shelter to those who do not have homes. As more immigrants have arrived, Adams has tried a variety of strategies to house the displaced including tents, relocation to the migrants to other areas within the city.

“This new policy raises many questions and concerns that the City has yet to address. It is also unclear whether State officials have provided any input on what the City proposes to implement.”

Adams declared an emergency situation in October 2022. He has urged the president Joe Biden, a fellow Democrat to make available additional resources and help immigrants get work permits.
