Army-Navy game hotel reservations canceled due to influx of migrants in Massachusetts

It is among the most anticipated events in college football. This season it will be hosted in Gillette Stadium. The game between the Army and Navy is scheduled to make it’s Foxboro debut on the 9th of December.

American presidents are often present Presidents of the United States frequently attend, however it is a guarantee that the tens thousand of vets will be pouring into the Boston region. Tickets for the game are sold out fast and hotel rooms are an extremely sought-after commodity.

It was the more concerning that Mark Mansbach, a travel agent from New Jersey, started getting messages from customers stating that their hotel rooms to attend the game were being cancelled. Mansbach decided to contact the hotels that his company was working with to help them prepare to host the game.

“They were leasing out the hotels to the state of Massachusetts for refugees,” Mansbach stated he was told. This was the reaction of three hotels run by Giri Hotel Management, according to Mansbach.

The firm, he explained that it was working in partnership with the state to shelter people in need under the right-to- shelter law. His clients’ prior reservations for hotel rooms were removed to maintain the contract to the government. Mansbach stated that 70 reservations of his were affected.

In a statement sent to WBZ-TV Thursday on Thursday, a Giri Hotel Management spokesperson didn’t speak to the cancellations in any way, but said they’re committed “to providing shelter and support to refugees at our hotels.”

“As a gesture of solidarity and humanitarian responsibility, we are opening our doors to those seeking refuge in our community,” the statement read. “We look forward to working with local authorities and organizations to ensure a smooth transition for all those who will call our hotels home during their time with us.”

Mansbach stated that in 20 years of work experience, he’d never seen anything similar to this.

“I have never had a hotel take rooms back and give me nothing. They sent out cancellations and walked away,” Mansbach said to WBZ. “Some people (clients) have decided not to go, and others found space in Boston. Some I have been able to put into other hotels that I had space left in.”

Governor Maura Healey discussed the issue on Wednesday afternoon.

“I am very distressed to learn that any veteran may have been moved from a hotel, who had booked a hotel for that game,” Healey stated. “As I understand it, those were decisions made by area hotels.”

Healey stated that she had instructed she instructed the Office of Veteran Services to investigate the issue. The agency informed WBZ Wednesday that it had been in communication with all individuals involved to determine if there was a veterans who were in need of the space.
