Democrat lawmakers in Massachusetts are considering giving foreign citizens with green cards the right to vote in municipal elections.
A number of bills introduced by Democrat lawmakers from both the Massachusetts House and Senate would allow municipal voting rights to foreign nationals in Massachusetts on green cards.
In reality, the rule would allow foreigners can cast their votes in Massachusetts cities and towns in the race for the mayor, school committee city council town council or board of selectmen elections for select boards, school committees’ referendums and local referendums or any other municipal elections.
The bills, which have to be considered by House as well as Senate committees that deal with election laws they are backed by Democrat lawmakers like James Eldridge, Samantha Montano as well as Mike Connolly.
“Immigrants are essential to our communities … many are on the path to citizenship but lack the ability to apply, but they need to have a say in how public services are funded and governed,” an official from the group MassVOTE addressed legislators during an hearing on the bill earlier this month.
Otherwhere in New England, particularly Connecticut and Rhode Island, Democrat legislators have fought hard to get legislation through this year. The legislation would not just grant legitimate immigrants the ability to vote, but as well illegal aliens.
