‘I made a mistake’: House Foreign Affairs chief detained by airport police for appearing intoxicated

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul was detained by police at Dulles International Airport earlier this month, in a situation McCaul described as “the result of a poor decision” to mix Ambien and alcohol.

An McCaul spokesperson confirmed this latest incident and described Congressman McCaul as “a nervous flyer” who consumed the popular Sleep aid Ambien and drank alcohol prior to embarking on a return flight to Texas.

McCaul ended up missing the flight, he informed Semafor. He also said that he had lost his senses due to the combination of medication and alcohol, which led to him locking himself from his mobile phone.

He was later spotted by the police, who believed McCaul was drunk and arrested the man, according to his representative.

“Two weekends ago, I made a mistake — one for which I take full responsibility,” McCaul stated in a letter to Semafor. “I was late for a flight to Texas and became confused at the airport. This was due to my poor choice to mix Ambienthe drug I used to sleep for the flight to follow — with a glass of alcohol. Police officers briefly detained me as I was waiting for a family member to collect me.”

McCaul said that he has “nothing other than respect and appreciation for the officers who questioned me in the evening. The incident is not reflective of my character or what I want to be. As a human being, I’m not flawless. But I’m committed to learning from my mistakes and, with God’s help, make myself a better person.”

He is a member of the term-limits in the influential Foreign Affairs Committee and would require a waiver by Republican leadership to remain in the position next year after the president-elect Donald Trump takes office.
